About Ultrasonic Technology: uses high-frequency vibration to generate a micro-fine mist. A fan blows the mist into the room where it immediately evaporates. Ultrasonic humidifiers consume very little power, are virtually silent and produce a fog-like mist.
Care of AIR-O-SWISS 7144 Ultrasonic Warm & Cool Mist Humidifiers
Cleaning: The recommended cleaning intervals depend on the air and water quality, as well as operating times. Every two - four weeks the water tank and base should be cleaned and rinsed with water only. If soft water is used, decalcifying the unit every 4 weeks with EZ Cal is suggested. If hard water is used the unit should be decalcified every 2 weeks. Only use the brush that is included to clean the membrane once a week. Change the water in the tank at least once a week if water is standing for more than a week. Reseting the cleaning light: The cleaning light does not automatically reset. Hold down the power button (button A in instruction manual) until the light stops flashing. The light automatically comes on approximately 14 days after plugging in the unit. Replacements: The ionic silver stick is a unique, patented solution for killing bacteria and viruses and needs to be replaced approximately once a year. For information on how the ionic silver stick works, (Click here for more information). The demineralization cartridge has to be replaced every 2-3 months. If the water is very hard, it may be necessary to replace the cartridge earlier. White dust around the device is a sure sign that the cartridge needs replacing.
Please note: In order to maximize the performance it is recommended the unit be placed at least 2 feet off the floor to allow the mist the opportunity to evaporate before hitting the floor and to eliminate the carpeting or wood floor surrounding it from becoming damp.
The following situations could contribute to excessive white dust so are recommended to be avoided:
Using water that has been treated by a water softening system could result in an increased incidence of white dust due to the excess sodium in the softened water. Therefore, it is recommended to use water that bypasses the system, bottled, or distilled water.
Use of this product with a negative ionizer air purifier or air cleaner with an optional post ionizing function could contribute to an increased collection of dust on surfaces. If this occurs try operating this product without the negative ionizer air purifier or with the optional ionizing function on the air cleaner off.

This ultrasonic warm and cool mist 7144 model of the Air-O-Swiss humidifier line up has become my new favorite humidifier this winter season. I tried it out when I had a hacking cough and kept waking in the night, and it definitely helped my breathing and reduced the amount of time I coughed in the night. Specifically, this is what I found.
Pluses:
After griping that my office had not sent me home with a manual, I found that Air-O-Swiss had thoughtfully put operating instructions inside the humidifier in an easy to view spot. Great for those who lose the paper manual anyway. I did figure out most of it, and get it operational without the manual, and I am not very handy, but the actual instructions were a nice bonus!
I found the size and the shape of the humidifier made it the easiest of machines that I have ever tested. It still fills up from the bottom, but even when it was full, it was a cinch to carry it and I did not have to ask for assistance from my spouse. Actually, I did ask for assistance once, but that was more from being annoyed at the hours of the resident couch potato when I was doing all the housework!
This humidifier is almost completely silent, most people will think it is totally silent, but I hesitate to say that for 100% since there is always someone outside the norm. However, I defy you to hear it the other side of your bedroom from your bed.
The humidifier gave forth a satisfying amount of mist, and the humidity in my room increased quite quickly. It was not a fair test however, since my Siamese cats kept walking in and out of the bedroom.
I confess to really liking the styling, and the silver/black color fitted nicely and unobtrusively with the bedroom décor.
Minuses:
If there was one minor thing to pick on, it was how the digital read out of humidity levels seemed to take a bit of time to settle down and give an accurate reading. I did check the levels against a separate hygrometer and found at most a couple of degrees difference.
You do have to figure out the controls when you have them up close and personal on a counter top, and then memorize them, because once I put this humidifier onto a small foot stool to raise it up off the floor (as per manufacturer’s instruction) you will not be able to differentiate the controls from far away, unless you have eagle, youthful eyes.
