General Description of the Austin Healthmate™ Air Purifiers
This Austin Air air purifier line with HEPA filters, as well as carbon and
zeolite filter media, are well regarded in the allergy industry. They have
an unusually large amount of impregnated carbon and zeolite mix (15 lbs.
in Austin Standard and Plus units and 6.5 lbs in Austin Jr.) for odor and
gas control and the standard and plus models are the largest air purifiers
of their kind.

The economical 1 ½ H.P. split capacitor only uses 115 watts of
power at its highest setting, and the motor only uses 400 CFM of
air movement cleaning range of up to 750 square feet (200 cfm on
high for up to 375 sq. ft. for the Austin Jr. air purifier model).
The air exchange rate is proportionately higher at maximum fan
speed. The included HEPA filter filters out allergens up to .3 microns
and 99.97 % efficiency. The units have 3 fan speeds.
There is an extra lengthy 5 year warranty on parts and pro-rated
5 years on the filter under normal household use. This offer saves
in replacement filter costs. The Austin Healthmate and Plus air
purifier models are mounted on 4 casters (Healthmate Jr. model is
not wheel mounted), and are not strictly portable but can be moved
easily on same floor. All units draw in air on all four sides. Each
unit is encased in steel and has a special baked-on powder coat
finish which has a non-gloss, lightly textured surface. The encasing
resists scratching, scuffing and smudging. It can be cleaned easily
with a just a wipe of the cloth.

Austin air purifiers do not produce ozone or negative ions.
In addition to all the air cleaning features of the standard Austin Air,
the Healthmate Plus+ air purifier is helpful for controlling "new carpet"
, fresh paint and woodworking odors. The Plus model has the same specifications
as the Austin Air standard model, except for additional filter treatment
of potassium iodide to give greater effectiveness in removing volatile
organic compounds such as formaldehyde, ammonias and odors.

We wish Austin Air had submitted their units to AHAM to back up their
claims around specifications. However, the listed specifications of this
filter are excellent. Remember that if you want the fan on low to control
noise, the air exchange rate is proportionately smaller.
Pluses:
- Energy cost efficient: economical to run with a low 80 watt
power consumption at highest setting - same amount of energy it takes
to run an 80 watt light bulb
- Quiet on low speed: the air purifiers motor is somewhat quiet
at low fan speed, which makes it much easier to live with in the bedroom
at night
- Long lasting HEPA + carbon + zeolite filter: the filter lasts
for 5 years before it needs replacement; there is a 5 year pro-rated
guarantee under normal residential use
- Durable exterior: casing materials are of superior steel construction
with a baked-on powder coat finish, and visually appealing with a choice
of 3 attractive colors

Minuses:
- The Austin Air air purifier is "portable” in as much
as it has wheels, but you would not want to lift this unit up
and down stairs
- The Austin Jr. does not have wheels, but it is lighter at 18
lbs. and therefore easier to move than the standard unit
- Many catalogs over-sell this machine by talking about 20 air
changes per hour, or 1500 square feet air cleaning capacity. We
wish Austin Air would monitor its distributors’ claims. The
truth is that when used on low fan speed 75 CFM this filter can
effectively clean a 141 sq. ft. size room at four air changes
per hour.

Summary: This air purifier
is one in the top 5 we have seen for domestic use and we are currently
testing it for its efficiency in the removal of particulates, over long
term usage.
