Seldom do we rave about a product, especially about air purifiers, which we regard as an area sometimes subject to misrepresentation and exaggeration. So when we tell you that this air purifier is a winner and among the best of its type we have seen anywhere, you can bet that is a very strong endorsement from us.
Pluses:
Unique filtration combines electrostatic and HEPA-like technology for a performance beyond almost every residential HEPA filter with the ability to filter 99.7% of particles down to .1 micron
Safe use of electrostatic technology does not produce ozone or off-gas
All-purpose air cleaner: the 403 or 450E used with the SmokeStop filter has 3 lbs. of impregnated activated carbon to offer removal of smoke, gases, chemicals and odors
Safe, effective and environmentally-friendly filter media - 100% recyclable polypropylene filter material is water-repellent and naturally retards mold and mildew growth eliminating the need for chemical-based bacteria or mold inhibitors that are used in most residential glass fiber HEPA filters

Minuses:
The biggest minus we could find is the units lack of a pre-filter: Pre-filters help prevent dust build-up on the fan and inside the unit which are hard areas to clean; a pre filter also helps extend the life of the Particle filter by trapping the large particles that quickly dirty a filter
Replacement filters are expensive and require semi-annual replacement which is twice as often as many HEPA filters that usually have a life span of 1 year. However, because these filters are made of polypropylene they can be gently vacuumed to extend their useful life lasting for 1 year or more depending on use. (Please Note: the 6 month lifespan is based on running the air purifier on high speed, 24/7)
The 400 models do not have casters so they must be carried, not rolled from room to room
Summary:
The Blueair 403 and 450E are ideal air purifiers to have in a mid-sized bedroom or office up to 365 sq. ft. The HEPASilent polypropylene filters are not only effective at filtering out tiny, harmful airborne particles, but also do not restrict the units air flow allowing for more efficient cleaning while running on the preferred low speeds. Not to mention, these filters are nontoxic and 100% recyclable! We would encourage the purchase of the units with the SmokeStop filters for particle and smoke, gas, chemical, and odor control to provide the optimum clean indoor environment. The HEPASilent particle filters are excellent for airborne particle filtration, but do not have any carbon so they will not remove any gases, odors or chemicals from the air. For those who like added conveniences, the 450E Digital models are easy to operate with a remote control, auto-mode and programmable timer.
