Filter Change Indicator: included with 503 models, this magnetic timer reminds you to change your filters every 6 months as recommended for optimal performance of your Blueair air purifier. The filter change indicator is a timer that counts down from 182 days (6 months). The timer is independent of actual run time. When 15 days remain to filter change, the blue LED light will flash. There is a snooze button that will let you turn it off for five days at a time. When 0 days remain, change the filters and reset the timer for another 182 days (6 months).

Pluses:

Minuses:
The biggest minus we could find is the units lack of a pre-filter: Pre-filters help prevent dust build-up on the fan and inside the unit which are hard areas to clean; a pre filter also helps extend the life of the particle filter by trapping the large particles and pet hair that quickly dirty a filter
Replacement filters are expensive and require semi-annual replacement which is twice as often as many HEPA filters that usually have a life span of 1 year. However, because these filters are made of polypropylene they can be gently vacuumed to extend their useful life lasting for 1 year or more depending on use. (Please Note: the 6 month lifespan is based on running the air purifier on high speed, 24/7)

We highly recommend the Blueair air purifiers for their quiet operation and filtration abilities. We encourage the purchase of the SmokeStop units with 5.3 lbs. of activated carbon to provide better control of smoke, gases, odors, and VOC's because everyone needs protection from VOC gas pollutants as well as the filtration of super fine particles. The Blueair air purifiers are our air cleaner of choice for medium to large bedrooms and living areas (up to 605 sq. ft.) where you want quiet air purifier to run consistently. Many people do not like the noise of a HEPA filter going at night, which can sound similar to a window air conditioner. Operating on the lowest speed the Blueair is virtually silent making just a slight whisper sound and uses only 35 watts. These air purifiers use a Polypropylene HEPA-type filter with electrostatic filtration technologies which has scored them very high Clean Air Delivery Ratings. These filters do not have the lifespan of a true HEPA, however under normal use and with the ability to vacuum them; we found that the filters will remain effective longer than 6 months. However, to keep your warranty valid, Blueair recommends that you replace them twice a year nonetheless. This will prevent you from using your filters long after their useful life has passed. The New 550E digtial model has alot of little user-friendly extras including a remote control. Both 503 and 550E now have a filter change indicator to tell when it's time to replace the filter - very helpful!
