We are thrilled to offer the new 501 and 651 dehumidifiers, and recommend them for people who need reliable humidity control in areas up to 1300 sq. ft., and operation down to 42°F for basement dehumidification. These dehumidifiers also offer accurate touchpad controls with digital humidity display - an appreciated extra not always found on low end dehumidifiers in this price range. Furthermore, the auto restart feature guarantees your settings will be saved and the unit will start backup after any power outage. The hot gas defrost enable dehumidification in colder temperatures. To insure your purchase arrives in excellent condition we have added foam support inserts and an outer box to the packaging.
Pluses:
- Low temperature operation: dehumidifiers operate down to 42°F, great for basements and features a hot gas defrost to prevent ice build-up. This is a new feature normally only found on more expensive industrial units.
- Auto restart useful through power outages: Particularly useful for those away from home often or vacation homes, because the units will automatically re-start themselves at the original settings once the power is restored.
- Energy efficient models: dehumidifiers have received an Energy Star rating, and it is always a plus to save on electricity bills.
- Set and forget humidity control with digital display: The digitally adjustable humidistat allows the operator to set the humidity level to a desired setting at 5% increments from 35% to 70% relative humidity. The intuitive controls are clearly readable on the top of the dehumidifier, and digital readouts give the room humidity and temperature plus the humidity level at which the adjustable humidistat has been set. The
internal humidistat maintains humidity level in a room automatically to desired setting by cycling the dehumidifier on and off as needed.
- Easy drainage options:
1. Water bucket with auto-shut off: uses a lever system to shut the machine off when the bucket is filled rather than the "float on a wire" system that tends to jam occasionally in some other units. When the bucket has filled, the unit will shut off automatically and let you know by a light on the top.
2. Automatic, easy to use gravity drain or pump: For those who want to constantly drain the water by use of gravity or a pump, this machine is ideal because the drain connection does not attach to a hole in the bottom of the bucket, but has a drain connection above the bucket. Included is a 1 foot solid plastic tube that gets pushed onto this drain connection, then run the tube out the back corner of the cabinet, and attach a hose to the threaded end of the tube, and never worry about emptying the bucket.
- Easy access, large front loading bucket: water removal buckets hold 22 pints, and are more convenient in front; easy grip handle is on bucket for emptying water, and slides in and out of dehumidifier easily.
- Portable: dehumidifiers roll easily on 4 casters, and can be lifted using the sturdy built-in hand grips.
- Fast drying fan speeds: Both fan speeds (high and low) produce a higher volume of air than most and will dry rooms more quickly.
- Convenient timers: Choice of 2 or 4 hour timer.
- Durable construction: Top and sides are fabricated of a sturdy metal.
- Removable bucket lid: Can be removed separately for cleaning to prevent possible collection of mold underneath lid.
Minuses:
- Air filter is above the bucket which is not super convenient for cleaning, as one needs to pull out the bucket first, then pull filter down and out; there is a piece of packing tape holding the air filter on all models; easier to pull down filter with two hands.
- Included continuous drainage tube can be awkward to insert into the continuous drainage hole; slot on the tube does not have to be in place for the drain connection to work properly; gently pushing the tab into its slot with a screwdriver should help.
- Older models were able to be placed against a wall but the new models will have to be either placed sideways against a wall or front facing allowing 12" of space all around the unit for the manufacturer's specified operation.
- When the hot gas defrost cycle is operating, the actual humidity readout will rise quickly to register Hi. It will readjust itself to the correct reading once the hot gas defrost cycle concludes.
Summary:
Since Comfort-Aire® makes dehumidifiers with proven reliability, coupled with all of the consumer friendly features in these new units, we can't say enough good things about the 501 and 651 dehumidifiers. Because they operate in low temperatures and meet US Energy Star requirements, these dehumidifiers are especially useful for basements and keeping energy costs low. If you need to pump the water out above the level of the bucket, consider the drainage pump sold below as well which is compatible with these dehumidifiers.
