- 6-Stage filter (6 steps explained in more detail below): Filter is used in single, double and triple filtration systems and is the last housing water is filtered through. Reduces silt, sediment, sand, rust, dirt, lead, copper, aluminum, chlorine, iron and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell), pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, volatile organic compounds (VOC's), trihalomethanes (THH's), and water hardness.
- Fluoride filter: Fluoride is a common constituent of many minerals. Municipal water treatment plants commonly add fluoride to the water for prevention of tooth decay, and they try to maintain a level of 1.5-2.5 mg/l. Waste water from glass and steel manufacturers and waste product of aluminum contains high levels of fluoride. The filter process and pre-resin medium reduces fluoride below 0.5 ppm.
- Nitrate filter: Most nitrates that occur in drinking water are the result of contamination of ground water supplies by septic systems, feed lots, and agriculture fertilizers. Filter contains a special nitrate selective resin for a 90 to 95 percent reduction. The capacity is 5500 ppm of nitrates as CaCO3.
- Solid Carbon cartridge: Simultaneously removes chlorine, bad taste and odor, and organic chemicals that contribute to taste and odor while providing particulate filtration and dirt holding capacity of an efficient 5 micron nominal sediment filter. Carbon type is coconut based.
- Ultrafiltration Micro-Filter: Ultrafiltration (UF) is an important purification technology for the production of high-purity water. UF is effective for the removal of colloids, proteins, bacteria, viruses, parasites, protozoa, and pyrogens and other organic molecules larger than .01 Micron size and most other water contaminations known today. Also removes pesticides and herbicides, as well as the hardness in water and salts.
- Ceramic filter: Effectively removes harmful bacteria such as E. Coli, Fecal coli form, Salmonella, Streptoccus and cysts (cryptosporidium, Giardia). Also reduces bad taste and odor, sediment and asbestos.
- Arsenic filter: Arsenic usually comes from mining or metallurgical operations or runoff from agricultural areas where materials containing arsenic were used as industrial poisons. How it Works — Ecor Environmental Stainless Steel Countertop Water Filters
Water Filtration Stages for 6-stage filter (please note: in addition to your choice of one or two specific filters with a double or triple filtration system, the 6-stage filter is the last housing water filters through)
- Stage 1: Water flows through pre and post one-micron filter pads (1 micron equals 1/25,000th of an inch), which removes suspended particles such as silt, sediment, cyst (Giardia, Cryptosporidium), sand, rust, dirt and other un-dissolved matter.
- Stage 2 and 3: Water flows through a bed of media made of special high-purity allow blend of two dissimilar metals-copper and zinc (KDF-55D and KDF-85D). KDF is a major advancement in water treatment technology that works on the electro-chemical and spontaneous oxidation-reduction (REDOX) principles. Chlorine is instantaneously and almost inexhaustibly oxidized. Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, copper, nickel, chromium, cadmium, aluminum, and other dissolved metals are removed from the water.
- Stage 4: Water flows through ion exchange resins, reducing heavy metals such as lead, copper, aluminum and water hardness.
- Stage 5: Water flows through granulated activated carbon (GAC). GAC is universally recognized and widely used as an effective absorbent for a wide variety of organic contaminants, such as chlorine (99.9%), chemicals linked to cancer (THM's, benzene), pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, volatile organic compounds (VOC's), PCB's MBTE's and hundreds of other chemical contaminants that may be present in water causing bad taste and odors in your drinking water.
Carbon is extremely porous and provides a large surface area for contaminants to collect. Carbon-only filters must also use their capacity for chlorine removal, resulting in a shortened life. A high-grade coconut shell carbon is used that is most effective at removing chemicals. Coconut shell carbon provides a significantly higher volume of micro-pores than either coal, wood or lignite based carbon. As a result, it is more effective than other carbon types in removing trihalomethanes (THM's) and other chemicals from municipally supplied water. Since the REDOX media removes the chlorine before it reaches the carbon, the carbon capacity is not wasted on chlorine and is free to concentrate more effectively on organic contaminates.
- Stage 6: Water flows through another one-micron filtration pad for further reduction of undesirable particles. The end result is a great reduction or total elimination of a wide variety of contaminants.
