How it Works — IQAir Gas Control Series Air Purifiers
These air purifiers take in air from the bottom of the unit, the air is passed through the pre filter, then through the fan, then through the gas media, the post filter and the air is vented out of the sides just below the top of the unit.
One thing to remember about all air purifiers is that the effectiveness of the air purifier depends upon the rate of recontamination. For instance, if you want to get rid of tobacco smoke and you continue to have smokers in your environment, the air purifier will not be as effective, nor will the filters last as long.
Air cleaners can remove the gases and odors from the air, but not those embedded in upholstery, draperies, clothing and carpet. To do that you must use a vapor steam cleaner. If you continue to recontaminate the area, you will be in a constant cycle of air purification and vapor steam cleaning.

The IQair Multigas air filter is a new entrant into the market place from Switzerland. It is a testament to precision Swiss engineering. The company behind this unit is in the hospital clean room business.
Pluses:
More Gas Phase Media: This unit has much more gas phase media than most units that we know of that are comparably priced.
Multiple Fan Speeds: Because of its large fan, centered in the middle of the machine the IQair is quieter than most [but not all] air filters we have tested. On the first two fan speeds you have a hard time hearing the air filter. On the third speed it is a pleasant quiet background hum. Like all air filters, it is fairly noisy on high speed so you probably want to use it on high speed when you are not in the room.
Lower than average noise level, quiet and almost silent on lower fan speeds: The IQair hepa air purifier has at its core a 700 cfm, 2950 rpm rated fan. That is twice as powerful as any other fan in any other air purifier on our site. Each fan is individually balanced and uses steel ball bearings. In July 2003, improvements to the fan increased air flow and made the air purifiers sound 20 - 30% quieter overall. Advanced Control Options: One of the big pluses of the IQair Multigas GC filter is its control options. While we did not see the need for the remote control ,we were impressed with the ability to set the machine to go on and off at certain pre-designated times (Set it on high as you are coming home from work or just before your employees come to work.)
Certificate of Performance: We were not quite sure whether this was a marketing gimmick, but given the variation in performance of some other machines we have tested, it was reassuring that each IQair Multigas GC filter has a certificate of performance in air delivery, filter leakage and particle filtration efficiency.
Filter Change Indicator: What our consumer panel loved about this air filter is the IQair lets you know when any of the filters need changing. This is an enormous plus in our eyes. Most people are using air filters that have out lived their useful life. Why wait as one manufacturer recommends, for the air to "smell bad"- change the filter when it needs to be changed.
The IQair for all its power is not expensive to run. It is one of the most efficient air filters from the energy consumption point of view (figure the same as one or two light bulbs).
No Offgassing: The IQair Multigas filter is constructed of non off-gassing materials.
Easy to Change Filters: One of the biggest pluses we saw, was the ease with which you could change filters. This was truly an impressive piece of engineering. Filters can be changed without a screwdriver in a matter of about 3 minutes. All the filters stack up modular fashion like "Chinese dim sum baskets". They just can be swapped in and out. This is really quite an ingenious piece of design.
Excellent Manual: The IQair comes with an excellent manual (believe it or not,some manufacturers just don't bother to provide one).
Gas Filtration: This unit filters out a wide spectrum of gases.
Minuses:
Comparatively speaking the IQair Multigas air filter is large, standing near waist height. It is nicely styled but it does take up room.
If quiet is the paramount feature you are looking for above all else, IQAirs are not our quietest air purifiers, although they are far from the noisiest. And now with a new improved fan as of July 2003, they sound 20-30% quieter.
