Introduction to Mold Test Kits
|
|
The Mold Test Kit (MTK) identifies and quantifies 5 predominant toxigenic molds / fungi such as stachybotris, and aspergillus. It only takes one person to implement the test and requires no special training.

How it Works — Mold Test Kits
"Mold" describes a wide range of fungi found virtually everywhere indoors and outdoors. If you detect a musty odor or water stains, it may be mold. Molds produce microscopic cells called spores, which act like seeds to form new mold growths (colonies) when they find the right conditions, such as in dark areas of excess moisture. When molds grow indoors, spores become concentrated in the indoor air, and can cause health problems when they are inhaled in large numbers. Excess moisture usually occurs in the following areas: air-conditioning units, basements, attics, and crawl spaces; bathrooms; carpets; heating and air-conditioning ducts; humidifiers and dehumidifiers; refrigerator drip pans; and water and sewer pipes. Identifying mold is important because it is a common cause of asthma and/or allergic reaction with sensitized people.
How do I perform the test?
- Collect samples of mold by following package instructions (i.e. peel the transparent tape off of a microscope slide, then put the tape on an area of concern such as on a bathroom tile, a/c unit, etc. Then put the tape back onto the microscope slide and put it back into the shipping package)
- Fill out about 6 easy questions on the enclosed form such as your name, where the mold was collected from, the time of test, and date
- Mail the test kit back in the box provided (postage included with purchase of kit)
- Expect the lab report results mailed back to you from the Environmental Diagnostics Laboratory (EDL) in 7-10 business days. You may also make a special request to receive the lab report via fax as well. This report will help define the environmental conditions as they existed during your sampling
Understanding the lab report:
All EDL microbiological reports are prepared with a glossary describing each organism at both the genus and specie level. If you have any trouble understanding the data in the report, you are given a toll-free number to contact a specialist who will help you understand your results for free. Your report includes guidelines you can use to see if you have a low, significant, or high amount of mold in your home, indicating the amount of risk of an allergic reaction.
Please note: The report furnishes information only and is not intended to be an interpretation of the results.
