Our O-Wool™ organic wool blankets are made from certified organic Merino wool. The wool is harvested from organically raised sheep. The Blankets are produced in accordance with the Organic Trade Association’s (OTA) Fiber Processing Standards. The colored blankets are dyed using low-impact dyes approved from the OTA.
Certified Organic Wool Production Requirements:
Livestock must be fed 100% organically grown feed and forage
Synthetic hormones and vaccinations are prohibited
Synthetic pesticides on livestock and pastures are prohibited
Genetic engineering is prohibited
Healthy livestock is promoted through good management
Certified Organic Fiber Processing Requirements:
Organic fiber must be handled separately from non-organic
Detergents for wool scouring shall be readily biodegradable
Must practice appropriate treatment of waste water
Oils used in spinning shall be of vegetable or animal origin
All dyes must be free of heavy metals and aromatic amines
Recyclable or readily biodegradable finishing materials are used
Carbonizing fibers using acid baths are prohibited
Organic facilities must practice structural pest management
Dyeing Technique:
Low-impact dyes are a synthetic dye that chemically bonds directly to the clothing fiber molecules. The fixation or absorption rate of low-impact dyes is very high, creating less waste water runoff and therefore a lower impact on the environment. Recent advances have created low-impact dyes with colors that are brighter and richer, and they provide excellent colorfast properties. They contain no heavy metals or other known toxic substances, and they meet all European Union criteria for being an eco-friendly pigment.
Organic Trade Association (OTA) approved Dye Requirements:
These blankets will stay the nicest by simply hand rinsing. For washing simply rinse in cold to lukewarm water and shake and hang to dry. Occasional machine washing cold on delicate cycle is ok. Never wash in hot water or dry in the dyer or in direct sunlight.
